OAKLAND - Since taking the bench last year, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Kimberly E. Colwell has been doing some number crunching to track her progress as she learns the ropes.

She inherited 703 cases a few months ago when she started her civil assignment. Between eliminating cases that had been resolved and working on the remainder, she said she's now at 559.
