SAN DIEGO - The expert witness seemed distracted. Every few minutes, he would look over his shoulder at a painting that hung on the wall behind the bench.

It was a rural scene of an old barn, cows grazing in the pasture and mountains towering in the background. It is one of more than a dozen paintings that brighten the courtroom of Superior Court Judge Charles R. Hayes.
