Shahrad Milanfar's first exposure to the California court system came early.

"I ended up getting beat up a few times when I was at Oakland public schools, and on one of those occasions, I had to go to court to testify against the guys who beat me up," recalled Milanfar, who moved from Iran to the Bay Area with his family when he was 10 to escape the Iranian Revolution.
