Court Rules in Child Support Case
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that the incarceration of South Carolina man for overdue child support payments violated his due process rights.
The court held 5-4 that indigent defendants who face jail time for civil contempt deserve either a lawyer or the benefit of procedural safeguards, like adequate notice and a fair opportunity to present a defense. The court's four conservative justices dissented.
